As we know, apple is a fruit that can only grow in four seasons regions such as in America, Australia and Europe areas. It grows in the place which temperature is not more than 12.
Then, why can it grow in the tropical place like Indonesia? You will find the answer below. In Indonesia, Malang is famous by the city of Apple named “Apel Malang”.
However, if you visit Malang, you will not find Apple trees everywhere.
So, where are apples grown? They are prosperously grown in Batu City which is still in the area of Malang City. Because Batu City is less popular than Malang City, people name the apple as Apel Malang.
The history of Apel Malang is firstly brought by Dutch farmer who lived in Malang. When Indonesia was colonized by Dutch, they had an idea to plant Jeruk Keprok Batu or Keprok Punten (Keprok Batu Orange). Nevertheless, the plantation was failed because of the disease that attacks the root of the trees that cannot be healed.
In the same time, there were many wild apple trees expanded in the area. One of the farmers, Pegtel, was interested in that apple trees. Then, he did grafting technic to grow the tree in the area which changed the Jeruk Keprok Batu plantation.
Moreover, he brought apple seedling directly from Australia to be planted in Pesanggrahan Village. From the seven seedlings he planted, only two which is died and the rest grew to be a new shoot.
Besides Pegtel, there is also agricultural expert namely Ir. Gherts. He also carried 19 kinds of apple trees seedling from Australia to be replanted in Nglebo Village, Pujo, Batu City.
After the seedlings grew successfully, in 1930 Pegtel spread the seedlings and their knowledge to other Dutch farmers in Batu, but the farmer should not tell the secret to the local farmer or Batu’s agrarians.
Then, due to the authority transformation by Japan, in 1942, Dutch’s farm was handled by local farmers. As the growers were asked to cultivate jatropha, apples plantation became abandoned.
However, in the pre-independence period where Japanese authority was not too tight, local farmers took on the plantation and started to plant apple trees. From that, many local agriculturists learn how to plant apple trees.
Finally, the name Apel Malang is established and becomes the icon of Malang City. Therefore, where apples grow? It is not purely from Malang City, but it is around Batu City, nearby Malang City.
