Whether it is dried or the fresh one, it always stays in the kitchen rack. The Rosmarinus officinalis, the rosemary herb plants’ scientific name, is native to the Mediterranean; therefore it means mist of the sea which refers to its foliage that is in gray-green color.

The rosemary herb plants are classified as a shrub with evergreen needle shape leaves and fascinating blue flowers. During spring and summer, rosemary plants bloom blue flower with piney fragrance. These plants are widely known as a seasoning purpose in most Western culinary and also as ornamental plants.

Rosemary Herb Uses

For centuries, the rosemary herb plants are used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. This herb is the main seasoning for Western food especially Italian culinary.

In Italy, most butchers will insert sprigs of rosemary in the meat order.  Generally, rosemary herb plants are a great combination for lamb, red meat, kid, fish, shellfish, veal, and many other dishes.


This herb is also a good flavoring combination for potato, carrot, and other root vegetables. Try to add some rosemary herb on spaghetti sauce, tomato soup, sauces and stews; it will bring out the flavor.

The fresh rosemary herb is the best one in term of flavor since the flavor of the dried one is not as strength and rich as the fresh.

Benefits of Rosemary Tea

Besides for culinary purposes, rosemary herb plants can also be consumed as the herbal tea. The rosemary tea is believed to have antioxidant and antibacterial substances.

Moreover, rosemary herb is also an excellent natural source of vitamin A, C, B complex, and many other good substances which can promote and protect body health.

Consuming rosemary tea can relieve digestion problems and promote brain health.

To make rosemary tea, you will need one and half to two teaspoons of dried rosemary. Steep the rosemary tea in hot water for about a cup for five minutes.

You can also add some honey if you like a sweet taste for the tea. For digestive ailments, consume for about three cups a day before a meal. The rosemary tea is also a good herbal ailment to reduce a headache, depression and cough as well as a menstrual cramp.

Benefits of Rosemary Oil

Another good purpose of rosemary herb is the rosemary oil. Similar to fresh and dried rosemary, the oil extractions also have tons of health benefits. However, the rosemary oil should not be used for an external purpose only. In rare cases, the oil extraction can trigger skin allergies

Rosemary oil can used to treat eczema, other skin problems, and joint problems. It also can quickly heal wounds and bruises. For those who has hair issues such as bad dandruff and hair loss; the rosemary tea can improve the scalp condition by applying the oil on hair and leave for about an hour.


Rub the rosemary oil on the feet or joint areas to fast relieve the pain. The extraction of rosemary antioxidant can be used as natural preservatives to extend the life of homemade products such as lotion and cosmetics.

However, since the rosemary can affect the menstrual cycle, the oil extraction should not be used by pregnant women but a small portion of fresh one in cooking purpose still acceptable.

Caring rosemary plants are easy; what you need is plenty of sunlight supply. It loves sunlight. Provides rosemary herb plants with well drained and sandy soil; it will grow well.

The rosemary herb thrives well in warm temperature and cannot stand in extreme cold or winter for about minus 1 degree Celsius. Therefore, the rosemary is very suitable for container gardening. You can water the herb once the soil dry and allow it to dry between watering periods.
